Camera Crews for Wickenburg's Ranch and Rodeo Country

Wickenburg claims two capitals of the world and can back both of them. The guest ranch business started here (Kay El Bar has been taking guests since 1926, in adobe walls raised between 1914 and 1925), and three ranches still run it. Rancho Rio, 55 acres on the edge of town, pushes roughly 30,000 team roping teams through two arenas in a year, more than 60 ropings in December alone. That combination means a production out here is not importing anything. The horses are already saddled, the wranglers are on payroll, the arena crews know where the dust goes at 4pm, and the barn manager will tell you straight whether your idea works before you burn a morning on it.

~55 min and 45 miles from Frontier Street: Wickenburg Way onto Grand Ave (US-60) and straight in, no freeway

Why Wickenburg

Local knowledge. National-grade craft.

Say the distance out loud: about 45 miles and 53 minutes northwest of the studio. Grand Avenue (US-60) leaves Glendale a few blocks from the door at 7018 N 57th Ave and runs the diagonal the whole way without a single freeway interchange, which is a kind trip for a grip trailer. Influence Studios schedules Wickenburg as long days or overnights, timed to the light and to the ranch's own working hours, so the drive buys a genuine production instead of a visit. Everything after wrap comes back to the nearly 10,000 sq ft Glendale building for edit, color, sound design, motion graphics and CGI, alongside a 30x10 ft LED volume wall the team calls the highest quality screen in Arizona, a 2,000+ sq ft cyclorama, a 500 sq ft podcast suite that seats six, and three standing sets. Single spaces start at $49/hr. The credits behind that room include Ford, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Nike and Amazon.

Three guest ranches, still taking guests

Kay El Bar's adobe buildings are on the National Register and it bills itself as Arizona's first guest ranch. Rancho de los Caballeros opened in 1948 and works 20,000 acres of high Sonoran desert with its own golf course. The Flying E runs cattle, cattle drives and team penning. These are working businesses with a booking calendar a call sheet has to respect, and they are not startled by production: the feature The Great I Am shot at Kay El Bar in the fall of 2021 after the crew lost Morocco to travel rules and needed somewhere that read as another century.

02

Roping season is the production calendar

Rancho Rio stacks more than 60 ropings into December and hosts the Ariat World Series Title Fights every February. The Everett Bowman Rodeo Arena at 935 Constellation Road, named for the Wickenburg rancher who ran the Cowboys' Turtle Association from 1936 to 1945 and effectively wrote pro rodeo's rulebook, carries the Gold Rush Days rodeo in February and the Four Corner States Bluegrass Festival in November. Big Tree, Silver Bit, Horns and Hooves and the rest bring the town's arena count to eight. Coverage gets built with the stock contractor and the chute boss first, then cut fast enough that a sponsor sees the reel while the ropers are still in town.

A town spending real money on its own story

The museum at 21 N Frontier Street took a $20 million gift in October 2025, became the Sigler Western Museum, and broke ground in January 2026 on a $30 million, 27,100 sq ft gallery and pavilion across the street. The Del E. Webb Center runs a 600-seat professional season out on Vulture Mine Road, and the Saguaro Theater has held a single 250-seat screen since 1948. Wickenburg also carries a substantial cluster of behavioral health campuses, The Meadows and Rosewood Capri among them, whose admissions films, clinician recruiting and alumni stories live or die on how identity and consent are handled. Those calls get made in the edit plan, not on the day.

Areas we shoot in Wickenburg

On your street, not just in your city.

Crews work these Wickenburg neighbourhoods and corridors regularly, so call sheets, parking and permits are a known quantity before the shoot day.

  • Downtown and the Frontier Street historic district
  • The Wickenburg Way and Tegner Street crossing, where US-60 meets US-93
  • Wickenburg Ranch and Trilogy, north up US-93
  • Los Caballeros, around the golf club and the guest ranch
  • The Vulture Mine Road corridor south of town
  • Constellation Road and the rodeo grounds
  • Congress and Yarnell, up US-89 into the Weaver Mountains
  • Morristown and Wittmann, back down Grand Avenue

Locations worth building a shot around

  • The Jail Tree at Tegner and Wickenburg Way, the town's jail from 1863 to 1890
  • The 1895 Santa Fe depot on Frontier Street, now the visitor center
  • Vulture City, a dozen restored buildings on 12 acres off Vulture Mine Road
  • Hassayampa River Preserve and Palm Lake, 770 acres of cottonwood and willow
  • Vulture Peak, 3,660 ft above the Vulture Mountains
  • The Saguaro Theater, a 250-seat single screen open since 1948

Ranch stills, arena action and the long winter light

Three lanes out here and they barely overlap. Guest ranch marketing is the steady one: casitas, tack rooms, the wrangler line-up at the barn before the morning ride, and a plated dinner that has to look like a ranch rather than a hotel, shot for the booking pages at Rancho de los Caballeros, the Flying E and Kay El Bar. Arena work is the fast one, run by run at Rancho Rio and the Everett Bowman grounds on Constellation Road, long glass, high shutter, dust in the air, galleries delivered before the trailers pull out for the next jackpot. Western portraiture is the deliberate one, because a hat brim throws a hard line across the eyes and silver blows out the second nobody is watching it, so these sessions run on scrims and fill rather than on luck. Wickenburg sits near 2,090 ft, high enough that the winter sun stays low and the usable window is longer than it is down in the Valley. Then the country itself: the cottonwood and willow gallery along the Hassayampa, weathered timber at Vulture City, the 3,660 ft profile of Vulture Peak behind everything. When a session needs walls instead of weather, the five-set portrait studio back in Glendale holds a motorized six-color seamless, a Victorian book wall and a 150 sq ft grass wall, from $49/hr.

Shoot on location here, or bring it to the Glendale portrait studio: five standing sets including a motorised six-colour seamless wall, a Victorian book wall and a 150 sq ft grass wall, from $49/hr.

The studio anchors it

The stage behind every Wickenburg shoot.

When the location won’t cooperate (heat, light, noise), production moves to our 10,000 sq ft Glendale facility: a 30 ft LED volume wall, a 2,000+ sq ft cyclorama stage, a podcast suite, and standing sets. Every space books by the hour, online.

Good to know

Wickenburg questions, answered.

It sets the order of everything. Horses get their own call time and their own handler, gear moves in quiet and slow, drones stay grounded until the barn clears them and never launch inside a warm-up pen, and the biggest lighting setups go up before the stock arrives rather than around it. The upside of shooting in a roping town is that the people holding the lead ropes do this for a living and will tell you in one sentence whether a shot is safe.

October through May is the working window. Vulture City runs weekends roughly October to June and closes from about mid-May to early October, the guest ranch season lines up with it, and July still averages 104 degrees even at Wickenburg's elevation. February is the loudest month in town, with Gold Rush Days and a full week of ropings, so lock those dates months out. Late October and January are the quiet, cheap, beautiful ones.

More than one office, which is why it goes in pre-production. The Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce at 216 N Frontier Street acts as the film office and issues the town permit for public property and rights of way, currently a $25 application. Anything in the roadway of US-60 or US-93 is ADOT's call, not the town's. Vulture City and the guest ranches are private property and negotiate directly, and Hassayampa River Preserve is a Maricopa County park with its own rules. We file all of it and build the schedule around whichever desk moves slowest.
