Video Production for Ahwatukee, South of the Mountain

Ahwatukee is the one part of Phoenix you cannot reach from Phoenix without going around a mountain. Its 35.8 square miles sit on the far side of South Mountain Park, boxed in by I-10 to the east and the Gila River Indian Community to the west and south, which is how a village of roughly 80,000 people ended up nicknaming itself the world's largest cul-de-sac. That isolation shapes what gets filmed here. There is no downtown and almost no corporate campus. The clients are the medical and dental practices on Chandler Boulevard, the brokerages, the home-service trades and the owner-run brands along Ray Road and 48th Street, all selling to neighbors who will recognize the intersection in the first three seconds of a commercial.

Why Ahwatukee

Local knowledge. National-grade craft.

Getting a crew over the mountain stopped being a project on 21 December 2019, when the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway opened between I-10 at 59th Avenue and the Pecos Road alignment. That west end is effectively the studio's on-ramp: 23 miles, about half an hour, no surface streets in the middle. Influence Studios keeps concept, direction, edit, color, sound, motion graphics and CGI in-house, and when a scene needs a controlled room rather than a foothills backyard, the nearly 10,000 sq ft Glendale facility carries a 2,000+ sq ft cyclorama, a 30x10 ft LED volume wall the team calls the highest quality screen in Arizona, a sound-treated podcast suite and three standing sets.

01

The only mountain in the Valley that is lit all day

South Mountain Park and Preserve runs 16,283 acres, and Ahwatukee looks straight at its south flank, the side the sun crosses from first light to last while the rest of the metro shoots the shadowed face. Pima Canyon Trailhead, the Desert Foothills trailhead and the Desert Classic Trail put a front-lit ridgeline behind an interview, a product or an apparel line without a single lighting truck.

02

Owner-operated, not brand-managed

The Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber represents more than 16,500 employees across its member businesses, and most of them work for someone whose name is on the door. Practices, brokerages, trades and the retail row at Ahwatukee Foothills Towne Center get a commercial shot in a day, cut once for broadcast and again for vertical, with the decision-maker standing at the monitor.

03

Fifty-six subdivisions, most of them gated

Ahwatukee Custom Estates, Foothills Reserve, Mountain Park Ranch and the custom hillside lots off Desert Foothills Parkway are association country, so a property shoot starts with a gate code and a posted notice rather than a tripod. Listing films, drone exteriors and twilight passes get cleared with the management company before the truck leaves Glendale.

Photography in Ahwatukee

Portraits with the mountain actually lit

Most Valley photographers fight South Mountain because they are shooting its shaded north face. From Ahwatukee the geometry flips: the south flank is front-lit all day, so senior sessions out of Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe, family sittings and team portraits can run at the Desert Foothills or Pima Canyon trailheads with a real ridgeline behind them instead of a stucco wall. Practices along Chandler Boulevard get matched headshot sets built to be repeatable when a new hire starts three months later. Real estate work covers interiors, twilight exteriors and drone across Mountain Park Ranch, Club West and the custom lots off the parkway. When July makes outdoors a bad idea, the Glendale portrait studio holds five sets indoors, including a motorized six-color seamless, a Victorian book wall and a 150 sq ft grass wall.

Shoot on location here, or bring it to the Glendale portrait studio: five standing sets including a motorised six-colour seamless wall, a Victorian book wall and a 150 sq ft grass wall, from $49/hr.

The studio anchors it

The stage behind every Ahwatukee shoot.

When the location won’t cooperate (heat, light, noise), production moves to our 10,000 sq ft Glendale facility: a 30 ft LED volume wall, a 2,000+ sq ft cyclorama stage, a podcast suite, and standing sets. Every space books by the hour, online.

Good to know

Ahwatukee questions, answered.

Yes, and it is a City of Phoenix permit rather than a county one. Commercial work inside South Mountain Park and Preserve runs on a Film and Digital Media permit filed through the Phoenix Film Office, the desert preserves put a ranger with the crew, and the window is one to four weeks, so the paperwork starts before a shoot date gets promised to anybody. Pima Canyon and Desert Foothills both fill with hikers early, so the call is usually first light.

Rarely, because it is handled with a notice instead of an argument. Ahwatukee is built almost entirely out of master-planned associations, so a shoot in Mountain Park Ranch, Club West or Foothills Reserve is cleared with the management company first, the crew parks where it was told to, and the footprint stays at two vehicles and a small package. Interiors and backyard setups usually need nothing beyond the homeowner's sign-off.

No. The village carries three ZIP codes, its own chamber, its own newspaper and its own high school rivalry, and people here search, shop and refer as Ahwatukee. So the work names the place on purpose: the intersection in the establishing shot, the trailhead everyone has hiked, the Towne Center lot they park in on Sundays. A spot that could have been filmed in any suburb in America converts worse here than one that opens on a street the viewer drives every day.
